It's no exaggeration to call Wicked one of the biggest movie musical events in recent history. Using the term "highly anticipated" to describe this film barely captures the fever pitch of excitement surrounding its release. After 20 years on the Broadway stage, getting a film adaptation off the ground has been a monumental effort. This is a much-delayed film production that's essentially been "in development" for more than a decade (at one stage, it was announced as coming in December 2019). But that's all in the past now....

If you're like me, you may be thinking the world does not need another cinematic version of Roald Dahl's beloved 1988 novel Matilda. Danny DeVito's 1996 film adaptation is an absolute gem and remains a cherished favourite amongst my fellow millennials. We've been down the path of Dahl remakes before. It never ends well (I'm looking at you, The Witches). Thankfully, Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical breaks the trend of disappointing Dahl adaptations to deliver a rollicking good time at the cinema with lashings of heart and humour plus a little...

A film that won ten Academy Awards (the outright second-highest tally in history) including Best Picture is hardly something you would think requires a remake. Remember how well that 2016 update of Ben-Hur went? To be fair, Steven Spielberg's take on West Side Story is officially an adaptation of Jerome Robbins' 1957 stage musical and not a reimagining of Robert Wise and Robbins' 1961 Oscar-winning classic. Regardless, comparisons will inevitably be drawn. Lucky for us, Spielberg has crafted a gorgeous new interpretation that practically leaps off the screen....

With three Tony Awards, three Grammys, an Emmy, an Oscar nomination, and a Pulitzer Prize, it's no surprise Lin-Manuel Miranda is the most in-demand man in Hollywood right now. In 2021, he'll be responsible for composing original songs for not one but two animated films (Sony Pictures' Vivo and Disney's Encanto) plus make his feature directorial debut with Netflix's musical Tick, Tick...

"Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." The wise Dr. Ian Malcolm of Jurassic Park once posed the brief but perceptive summation that just because something can be done doesn't mean it should be done. It seems the perfect quote to relate to the disastrous CGI mess that is the big-screen adaptation of mega-successful stage musical Cats, the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history. Just because one can superimpose a human's face onto a cat's body...

In recent times, cinema has exploited the music of ABBA, Queen, and Elton John to create giddy jukebox musicals, each seeking to cash in on the insatiable appetite for music nostalgia. It was all but inevitable The Beatles would be next. Avoiding the simplistic option of a biopic to document the rise of Liverpool's favourite sons, Yesterday offers a daringly original proposal; what if the entire world forgot The Beatles ever existed, bar one lucky musician? In the hands of Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and beloved screenwriter Richard Curtis,...
