06 Dec Nomination predictions for the 2019 Golden Globes

As I say every single year, predicting the Golden Globes is fraught with problems. They are the most unpredictable awards of the season, and there’s really no knowing what wacky choices they’ll make this year. There’s always a few picks from out of nowhere plus a few mega-celebrity nominations, based solely on the hope they’ll show up to the ceremony. But in a season without a solid Best Picture frontrunner and an already topsy-turvy pre-season, these nominations could actually make or break a few Oscar campaigns. Good lord.

It’s fairly certain we’ll see plenty of love for the four frontrunners in A Star Is Born, The Favourite, Green Book, and BlacKkKlansman plus attention for late-comers Mary Poppins Returns and Vice. And this could be the biggest hurdle for Widows and First Man, both early contenders who seem to have run out of steam the last few weeks. If they both get snubbed outside the acting categories (as I’m sadly predicting), their Best Picture campaigns are cooked. Keep an eye out for Eighth Grade. If it takes one of the five Comedy/Musical Picture spots and/or pops up elsewhere, it’s undoubtedly become a serious contender.

But the big question mark centres around Black Panther. If it takes a Drama Picture nomination, its Best Picture campaign takes a huge leap forward. If it misses, it’s not all over, but it will make its journey to Oscar night a little tougher. You don’t necessarily need a Golden Globe Best Picture nomination to receive the same from the Academy. Last year, Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread were overlooked by the HFPA in the Drama category, and still ultimately scored Best Picture nominations. But they didn’t have the dreaded “superhero film” tag Black Panther is desperately trying to move beyond. A tick of approval from the Golden Globes will only help the film’s cause.

As always, take these predictions with a grain of salt. The HFPA are often dazzled by celebrity over performance, so there could be a whole host of shockers coming. Alas, here are my final predictions for the Golden Globes film nominations for 2019.
